Castle Dairies and Halen Mon team up for new Welsh Butter roll

One of Wales’s largest family-owned dairies, Castle Dairies, has launched a new product partnership with Halen Mon Anglesey natural sea salt.

Made with Welsh cream and Halen Mon sea salt crystals, the new butter is packaged as a premium 200g roll and launched in 54 Tesco stores throughout Wales this month.

Family-run and based at its Caerphilly dairy since 1966, Castle Dairies churns its butters with 100-per-cent Welsh cream sourced from over 200 Red Tractor Assured farms in Wales.

Halen Mon was the UK’s 60th Protected Food Name and one of the few sea salt producers in the country to hold Certified Product Status from the Soil Association. It is stocked by some of the UK’s best-known delicatessens, retailers and restaurants.

Accentuating the flavour

“Butter and salt are an obvious match, but this is the first collaboration of its kind for us – Halen Mon's natural sea salt crystals really accentuate the rich, creaminess of our Welsh butter,” remarked David Cooknell, head of sales at Castle Dairies.

“We love the idea of our two great Welsh food brands coming together and it’s fantastic to see our names side-by-side throughout Tesco stores in Wales,’’ he added.

Jess Lea-Wilson, brand manager at award-winning Halen Mon sea salt, said her firm was delighted to be supplying Castle Dairies with Halen Mon sea salt to make a truly outstanding Welsh butter. “In Wales we are so lucky to have some incredible natural resources – clean seas make for exceptional sea salt, and plush green fields mean we can churn the most flavoursome butter,” she said.

Spreadable butter tub launch

Alongside the new Castle Dairies Halen Mon roll, the company is also launching its Welsh 500g spreadable butter tub with the same Tesco stores. Its Great Taste Award-winning spread, made from 100-per-cent Welsh butter, is a creamy butter that spreads straight from the fridge.

“We’re excited that this product will be more widely available for our loyal customers across Wales,” continued Mr Cooknell, “as well as providing Welsh customers with more opportunities to enjoy high quality, locally sourced produce, made and grown here in Wales.”

Part of Love Local Tesco promo

Both products will feature in the retailer’s Love Local Tesco event at promotional prices through August.

Tesco local sourcing manager for Wales, Nathan Edwards, said his firm was delighted to be launching the two new lines from Castle Dairies in store, and that Tesco was especially pleased to be the first supermarket to be able to bring the dairy firm’s new premium Welsh butter roll to our customers.

“It’s delicious and a really special product – and the fact that it’s made with Welsh sea salt makes it even more special. I know Tesco shoppers will love it as much as I do.”
