Sedamyl recruits in UK to support expansion plans

Italian-owned agribusiness Sedamyl is looking for new team members to fill a number of roles as part of a rapidly expanding workforce in support of the firm’s £80 million expansion project at its plant in Selby, UK.

Amid a year of unprecedented challenges for the UK economy, Sedamyl  – one of the country’s leading manufacturers of proteins, alcohol, starches, and sweeteners – has announced an £80m investment that will see its Yorkshire-based plant double its potable alcohol capacity and add new lines for the production of liquid sweeteners. The firm said the new expansion would create up to 75 jobs and support hundreds more in the supply chain.

As well as recruitment opportunities, the expansion plans will see the Italian firm double UK production, add new product lines, and provide an increased market for wheat grown by local farmers.

Announced in February 2021, the expansion is slated for completion in Autumn 2021. Deliveries of high-quality liquid sweeteners from the expanded plant are expected to start in late-2022.

To support its expanded operations, the firm is seeking to fill a variety of roles, including shift operators and logistics staff, alongside lab technicians, mechanics and engineers.

A decade of impressive progress

In the past decade since the Selby facility was acquired by Sedamyl, its workforce has expanded from just 40 people in 2012 to nearly 100 in 2021, and the firm has forged a strong reputation for its career development opportunities, delivering impressively high staff retention rates within its diverse team.

Ross Glover has worked at Sedamyl for seven years, spending time as a Shift Operator before becoming a Technical Operator. He said: “The best thing about working at Sedamyl is being given the opportunity to progress within a company that’s growing so rapidly, and to feel like a valued member of the team. It’s rare to be part of an expansion of this size and see all the accomplishments along the way, and I expect the company to continue to grow and succeed year on year, developing the workforce as it does so.”

Elena Frandino, Managing Director at Sedamyl UK and a member of family that has owned the business for 60 years, said: “Over the years we have built a solid reputation in Selby and are now a major local employer, and that is all down to our incredible team of dedicated staff. We know how important it is to retain the very best workers and have invested heavily to ensure we offer an attractive package and a positive workplace culture.

“This latest development means we can continue to recruit to support our team and the local economy, whilst maintaining our position as one of the leading UK manufacturers of sweeteners, starches and derivatives.”

An industry leader

Originally founded in Italy in the 1950s as a fruit distillery, Sedamyl has grown to become one of Europe’s industry leaders in grain processing, with the production of starches, sweeteners, proteins and alcohol. The Italian business – which has two production sites (in Italy and in UK) and its own sales organisation covering the EU and UK – has been owned by the Frandino family since 1961.

In the UK, Sedamyl processes wheat to manufacture a range of value-added products that includes gluten, starch, alcohol for food & beverages and wheat-feed.

Sedamyl was recently shortlisted in the Emerging Business category at the 2021 Food and Drink Federation Awards in recognition of its growth and investment in the business.
