Market dynamics nurture growth in global demand for food safety testing

According to a new report, the market for global food safety testing systems and services will reach an estimated US$19.63 billion by 2022. This tremendous market growth will be spurred by an increase in foodborne diseases, rising food recalls, and more stringent governmental regulations, predicts Markets and Research, who authored the report.
Changing food habits, the rise of mass catering, a growing consumer awareness regarding food safety, and globalisation of food supply are raising the global demand for food safety. To prevent food contamination or infection, multiple techniques are used for food safety testing – including Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), immunoassay, Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), rapid culture detection, and biosensors. With the advancement in technology, various new tests are developed including tests for gluten sensitivities, intolerance food fraud, rapid pathogen detection, pesticides, and antibiotics.
Globalisation of the food industry is the major challenge for the food safety testing systems and services market, notes the report. Different regional regulations and oversight between countries could result in supply chain uncertainties and affect the food safety testing industry, especially since various countries’ government and regulatory bodies are contributing significantly to the food safety testing systems market.
High demand for pathogen tests
The new report notes the high demand that exists for pathogen tests internationally. Contamination of food can occur due to the presence of pathogens, residues, toxins, GMO, and allergens, among others. Among all targeted test, tests for pathogens dominates food safety testing as gradually more high-priced rapid technology-based solutions are employed. These pathogen tests are to identify a wide range of microbiological species, which include E. Coli, salmonella, campylobacter, and viruses, among others.
The global market for food safety testing and services includes a large number of small-sized and medium-sized food safety testing laboratories. System manufacturers offer food safety testing products to testing laboratories of food production companies or to a third-party testing laboratory.
Leading manufacturers in the segment include 3M, Bureau Veritas, SGS, Intertek, TUV SUD, Eurofins, and ALS Ltd.
North America is considered as the most advanced food safety programme region across the globe, while Asia-Pacific (APAC) is anticipated to be the fastest growing region over the forecast period. Owing to the vast market base for food & beverages, improved standard of living, rise in income levels, and increased awareness about food safety, APAC is expected to register a significant growth rate by 2022. As a result, emerging nations such as China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam and Brazil are expected to present distinct opportunities for the food safety testing systems market.
