Fiorentini eats up energy savings

Leading European snack manufacturer Fiorentini aims to achieve over 400,000 kWh in energy savings annually. ABB’s Ability™ Energy Manager will create a digital twin for sustainable decision-making and enable the monitoring of almost 100 intelligent communication devices in real time across Fiorentini’s high-tech production plant.

Fiorentini – one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of crackers, cereals and rice cakes – has specified ABB AbilityTM Energy Manager to control the entire electrical power distribution across its new, sustainable, 56,000-square-metre production facility in Trofarello (Italy).

The installation will support Fiorentini’s ambitious sustainability commitments to reduce energy consumption by 400,000 kWh each year.

ABB’s real-time digital twin

Monitoring almost 100 intelligent devices across the factory, ABB’s AbilityTM Energy Manager provides a real-time digital twin to remotely monitor the status of all critical power distribution and consumption points, and the performance of critical assets on the factory floor. This total visibility across all assets allows Fiorentini to make informed decisions on production line performance and energy consumption, maximising energy savings and making the factory as sustainable as possible.

Luca Perri, operations manager for the Fiorentini factory said: "With our new ABB digital platform, we can set up the cost plan on a daily basis to quantify real-time energy consumption; this allows us to optimally allocate energy resources and assets which will help us to achieve our ambitious energy saving targets.”

To ensure continuous power supply for the plant, ABB also supplied ABB Emax 2 air circuit breakers that deliver high performance in compliance with the latest IEC standards and seamless integration into all automation and energy management systems. Tmax XT molded case circuit breakers with type PR332 trip units were also installed for advanced protection and early fault detection.

Achieving total visibility across all assets

Davide Selvatico, energy consumption data analyst at Visio – Fiorentini’s energy service company – concluded: "The efficiency of monitoring and the reliability of the measurement systems gives complete visibility of how the site is performing.

“This continuous audit of energy usage – at a total plant level, together with individual department and consumption centre level – provides the insight needed to reduce costs and create a sustainable approach to energy usage across the factory,” he added.
